Neurodiversity is still a topic that is somewhat stigmatized. Individuals are not yet free to let their neurodiverse flag fly proudly because of the stereotypes of those who have a difference being somehow "less than" anyone else. The truth is, most folks who are neurodiverse have an above average IQ and simply have a harder time accessing it. We have a "superpower". We are placed in a position where we have to see the world differently. Because of that, we are market movers and shakers...the key is the be loud, proud, and advocate for ourselves.
It's a hugely scary step to step out into the spotlight for your difference, but trust me it's worth it.
There are several reasons why announcing your difference can be advantageous. First, you are protecting yourself under the ADA. The more people know, they less they can claim you were being "lazy" or "not paying attention to the right details" etc., instead, they'd have documented proof of your difference thus allowing yourself some protections. Second, the more you are loud about it, the more they are forced to adjust instead of you being the sole one compensating around them. Third, the more you are loud, the more others will feel comfortable being loud.
Never be ashamed of your difference. If a company or manager treats you poorly because you are loud and proud, then report them immediately. We are the way of the future, and we will show the world what we can do while not fearing retribution for having the audacity to be different
Time for the world to recognize the super powers and utilize the unique abilities of neurodiverse brains. Certain types of careers are particularly suited for these special minds.
