Market Mayhem

Everyone is feeling the pains of the current market. Whether you've been let go of recently (or ever because, yes, this is a trauma), or if you're scared of being let go, the sentiment is there. What do you do? How do you keep your head above water? The cost of everything is skyrocketing. Salaries are not being raised to meet inflation, and benefits are slim. So what's the right thing to do in this climate?
First, our best advice is to always keep your resume updated at all times. Every couple of months (maybe once per quarter) take a look and update your skillset, project work etc. By doing this, you are preparing yourself for new opportunities and won't need to take this extra time recalling everything you've ever done in a moment of crisis.
Second, build your network. I cannot emphasize this enough. Building your network means having coffee chats with folks who work for places you'd be interested in, talk to people about roles they have that you'd like to strive for. The more you build that network, the more you are equipped to utilize that force if the need arises. So many interviews are gotten because of the people you know or your recruiters know.
Third, never be afraid to ask for help. In these uncertain times, it's important to think through what you want and how to go about achieving that. Asking for help is part of building a network. Building that relationship and not being afraid to be transparent and honest with the group allows for folks to help more whenever they can.
The Essentialist has a great network, working with great people.
